If you look under the business section of this site, you'll see how we chose Academy of Business Excellence Limited as the name of our business services company. When we set up this company to offer accounting services, it made sense to keep the same essence.
Accounting is all too often seen as a black box where mysterious things happen to your data. In the film "The Balance Sheet Barrier" Ronnie Corbett suggested they should start with the balance sheet - the window through which we view the firm. John Cleese responded: "The balance sheet is the blind drawn by accountants to keep us in the dark".
We don't claim to have all the answers - you know your business better than anyone else can. But we have training, experience and resources which, combined with your knowledge can help you achieve better results for your business.
Our preferred approach is to work with you to appreciate the information you have, firstly by ensuring it's correct, and then by enabling you to use it appropriately. For example if your system tells you that debtors is $50,000, there is not much you can do with that. But if it's always been around $25,000. but for the last four months it's suddenly doubled, then there could be issues that need dealing with. It may be that sales have suddenly also doubled. Or it may be that debtors are suddenly taking twice as long to pay. It means nothing much on it's own - but with additional information comes increasing clarity.
There are key figures you should monitor - some common to most businesses and some specific to yours. For example if you sell your time, then you'll want to monitor chargeable time vs non-chargeable. If you sell goods, you'll want to monitor gross profit, stock levels and so on. But knowing the figures is only the first step - on it's own it achieves little.
We try and help you understand what the figures mean, and how you can use them to improve things. Of course we encourage you focus on things which make the biggest or quickest differences. Doing the tax return is often seen as the ultimate aim of accounts - but there is a saying in business: What you can measure you can manage. That's why we believe clients should have reliable systems that they understand and use.
We want to be part of your team - not just number crunchers you hear from once a year. We leave you with the definition of Academy we have in our other company.
Academy: The garden near Athens in which Plato taught. Today an academy is a place of study or training in a special art. We see learning as a life-long process which occurs most effectively when it occurs within the context of real life - not when you're cloistered away from the real world. Just as importantly, while some happens when you're on your own, much learning happens when you're not on your own.
Learning as vital to life. We each have learned different things at different levels. I used to feel cheated that some things we learned turned out not to be so (such as some of the science or history we learned at school). Now I see it as part of an ongoing process, which will never be completed during our life on earth.
We love to help people learn more about an aspect of their business they often feel less than thrilled about. In turn, we often learn little bits about their business activity.
